Mesothelioma symptoms to diagnosis


Diagnosis of the affects of Lung cancer or asbestosis caused by exposure to asbestos can lay dormant for as many as 10-20 years taking up to 50 years for any symptoms to show. This makes this disease particularly dangerous and early diagnosis is important in order to allow more effective treatment. There are many different conditions caused by the onset or Mesothelioma which can also be attributed to other diseases so a comprehensive health check is vital for an accurate diagnosis.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma?

Symptoms often occur as fluid begins to develop on the lining. This can cause a range of symptoms that in combination commands a visit to the doctor. On average, person may wait up to 5 months before seeking medical advice about their symptoms.

  • Coughing
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Pain in Abdomen
  • Weight Loss
  • Fluid in Chest
  • Difficulty sleeping

Tumours in the lining of the lungs prevents the lungs to move freely causing shortness of breath and coughing. The spread of the disease to the abdomen adds to weight loss and further symptoms caused by the spread can affect the throat and casue swelling in the face.

Depending on the form of mesothelioma, different symptoms can occur. Peritoneal disease affects the intestines, liver and other organs of the abdominal area. Fluid build up the abdomen leads to bloating.  Because the liver plays a major function in manufacturing the substances needed to control bleeding, there is often a decrease in the ability to make blood clots.  Weight loss occurs for several reasons, and is more dramatic in the Peritoneal form of the disease. 

Specific symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma:

  • Loss of weight
  • Fever
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Abdominal mass
  • Buildup of fluid in abdomen
  • Abnormal blood clotting
  • Abdominal pain

Pleural Mesothelioma Cancer which is the most common form can cause the following symptoms based on the degree of spread of the cancer.

Specific symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Husky voice
  • A persistent cough
  • Pain in lower back
  • Shortness of breath
  • Pain in side of chest
  • Fever
